The trees are exploding into bloom and if you're like most of us here in the south, you're popping allergy meds like candy. That can only mean one thing... SPRING IS FINALLY HERE! There's no better time than springtime to turn over a new leaf in your closet and I'm here to tell you the seven things you need to get OUT of your closet right now.
1. It's Out of Style
Face it. That pair of mom jeans you've been holding onto since the 90s aren't coming back anytime soon. (At least we hope not!) The waffle weave sweater you bought at The Limited in 1983 is old enough to be married twice already. Live in the now, people.
2. It's "Out of Style"
Many years ago, a hilarious and very wise woman I know told me a funny story about her father. She said that when her father had outgrown an item of clothing, he wouldn't say he had gotten too large to wear it, he would say it's "out of style." I heard her story fifteen years ago but I found it so funny that to this day, my husband and I use it to describe things that no longer fit us.
3. It's Not Your Style
Even if something is currently in fashion and it even fits you, the problem might not be the item -- it could be YOU. If you caved to the latest fashion trend and later realized you just can't pull off skinny jeans or you feel silly wearing the latest shoe craze, consign it while it's still current.
4. It's a Terrible Color
We all have colors we look amazing in and others that aren't at all flattering. If you bought an item in a color that makes you look ill, sallow or washed out, odds are good that you don't wear that item a lot. Why keep it? Consign that bad boy and let someone else get some use out of it!
5. It's In Disrepair
Pills. Snags. Fading. Fraying. I know you love it, but if it's in disrepair pull it out and have it fixed. If it simply can't be fixed, you can't wear it anyway, so why torture yourself by keeping it around?
6. It's a Critter
Yes, critters can live in your closets and as much as we like to think it won't happen to us, it can. Last Thanksgiving I experienced a heartbreaking critter situation and I don't even know how it happened. You bet I vacuumed every nook and cranny of my closet after that! Before putting your clothing away for the season, have it freshly cleaned to help avoid the situation I had.
7. It's Not Really Clothing
If your closet space is packed like a can of sardines, take a moment to look around for areas of opportunity to open up space. Are there things in your closet that aren't clothing and that would make more sense to store elsewhere? If so, remove and relocate them.
